Rates & Logistics: How to Pay

We have yet to find an ideal way to move money to Kenya.  Often we recommend PayPal because of PayPal’s relative speed and excellent security features.  Bank transfers are also an option.  Please allow up to 5-10 days for most transfers.

Although we would love to, we cannot guarantee a rate or a room until payment is made.  Generally rates are good for about a week, but we advise booking within 48 hours of receiving a quote.  We always re-confirm with hotel or homeowner once you have decided.

Processing fees for each transaction (in dollars):

$0 - $500 
$85 

$500 - $1000 
$85 - $150 

$1,000 - $2,000 
$150 - $250 

$2,000 - $5,000 
$250 – $350 

$500 maximum.

Reservations/Cancellations

• Deposit: 50% at time of confirmation.

A Word on Tipping:

We encourage you to express your appreciation by tipping anyone who’s done a good job for you.   In Kenyan restaurants, the usual rate for tipping wait staff is lower than it is in Europe or the U.S. – the range is between 5 and 10 percent.  But in tourism, the usual tip is about the same: a minimum of 10 percent, but usually 15 or 20 percent.  The tourism industry is very seasonal on Lamu and our employees, mostly local Swahilis, depend on what they make during the tourist season to get through the year.

Tipping is always voluntary, of course.  But we work hard to keep our prices affordable, so we hope you’ll be generous with our guys.  If you have any questions, please ask your tour guide – who also, we are sure, would appreciate a tip!

Getting Here and Away

Bus:
You can catch a bus from Mombasa or Malindi: a bone-crunching but beautiful ride through the wetlands.  Watch for birds and hippos!

Car:
If you drive, it is approximately seven hours from Mombasa and four hours from Malindi. You will have to park your car on the mainland at the Mokowe jetty and take a boat to Lamu Town or Shela.
